There has always been a debate concerning Macs and PCs. Some argue that Macs are clearly superior because they are easier to use, have fewer bugs and aren't as susceptible to viruses and malware as PCs are, and come with better software: all of which is true. However, PCs have the advantage in price, options, accessories, and popularity. If you're looking for a cheap laptop to perform simple tasks such as word processing and web surfing, the decision of whether to use a Mac or PC depends on a few things.
Firstly, the cost. Macs plainly cost more up front, and cost more to maintain down the road. Since Apple is responsible for the hardware and software in every Mac, you're forced to pay them for every accessory and repair performed. With PCs, you can easily find a tech guy down the road that can fix your computer quite cheaply.
Secondly, options. There is a much larger market for PC repairs, and many more software and hardware options for PCs. However, you may not want to download all sorts of free software and may only want to use a basic web browser and word processor. In that case, Macs definitely have the upper hand. Apple's iLife suite comes with a word processor (not Microsoft Word, however - you'll have to pay more for that), and many multimedia editors such as iPhoto and iMovie (for photo and movie editing, respectively). If you only want to use Microsoft Word (the standard text editor on the Mac and Windows platforms), you'll need to pay extra for it irregardless of whether you're using a Mac or a PC. The only difference is that you might be able to borrow an older copy from a friend if you're running the Windows OS (operating system).
For you, I suggest getting a Mac. You are already familiar with OS X (the operating system used on Macs), and you won't need to install much else beyond iLife (unless you want to use Microsoft Word). I think that while Macs are more expensive than PCs (or a Dell laptop), you'll have an easier time using an Apple laptop, and there will be no problems with compatibility between your existing iMac and a new Apple laptop.

Although dells are somewhat cheaper, they are only cheaper because they use cheap parts and are slower computers, apple is a high quality company, so the price has to be high, also mac osx is a better operating system for anyone unless your a computer gamer. and dells are more fragile and are prone to viruses. Ive had my mac laptop for 2 1/2 years and it looks brand new
also the guy above me is wrong macs are wayy easier to use and have better and more programs. hes probaly never used or owned one. I have a dell xps 410 it sucks even tho it was like 2000 somethin but I love my macbook

well, if you are going for cheaper, then the dell is the way to go. it does suffer a bit compared to the apple with storage space, but it is way more user friendly, using Vista instead of OSX Tiger. but, in the end, it's your call.
