Personally from saying a gajillion names with the middle name of Robert, I'd say you should go for something that's a longer name, instead of somethin short like Ian.

How about something really unique for a first name, with the more conservative middle name. My husband's name is Robert and it is one of the most common names. EVERYONE is named Robert. (Especially since our last name is Garcia. Can you imagine how many Robert Garcia's there are listed at Blockbuster? Its an ordeal just to rent a movie)
So why not make his first name really unique and different and balance it with the traditional middle name.
