are you all about dewalt or are there better tools and cheaper for the same purpose

I find that the primary issue has always been the BATTERIES.. Many cordless tools still work on Nickle cadminum batteries which are cheap but the batteries do not work for very long.. Nickle Metal Hydride batteries are better.. and Lithium Ion batteries last the longest..

If you are going to use it a lot.. if you buy a cheap system you could end up replacing the batteries several times .. and since replacement batteries are expensive it will cost you the same (plus the time to go find them, etc.)

Dewalt and Makida have better batteries and thus they both cost more but they last a lot longer.. I have a friend that has a Ryobi and he was replacing batteries every 3-6 months..

The other issue is the voltage.. I have an old 7.4 volt system that works fine for most simple household uses... but it does not last long and it does not have a lot of power.. look for one that has at least 14 volts.. 18 or higher is better.

While DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita and Rigid are all fine tools, they are all very expensive, both to purchase and to repair. I repair all these tools, both corded and battery operated, in my business and when I grab a cordless drill it's my Ryobi. Cost me a third of what one of the others would have, I can buy two 18 Volt batteries for under $40 and it's never let me down. I've actually bought several more of them used, some from Ebay, some at local garage sales. They all work fine and do the same job that the more expensive models do.

DeWalt is without a doubt the best cordless power tool brand, and they better be for the amount on the price tag. I have used a variety of Black and Decker tools without incident, although for sheer power they couldn't compare to DeWalt. For home applications, Black and Decker should be reliable for any project you have in mind. Whatever you do, do NOT buy Firestorm products. I have bought a cordless drill, a cordless jigsaw and a corded jigsaw and all three didn't last more than 3 months without some major problem (drill batteries wouldn't hold a charge and both jigsaws lost the ability to hold a blade). I'll just reiterate that none of my DeWalt tools have ever, ever had any problems.

I work as an industrial electrician. We have used Black and Decker, Makita, Craftsman, DeWalt and many others.

As a craftsman who uses cordless tools every day of the week I wouldn't bother using anything other then a Dewalt 14.6 or 18v cordless powertool. The 18v is the best around hands down.

I've owned DeWalt, Makita, Bosch and Ridgid tools. My DeWalt lasted a long time with heavy use. My Makita has already started to have problems, as my cabinet maker predicted. I've been purchasing Ridgid of late and they seem well designed and quite durable. Plus they have a lifetime warranty if you register the tool.

I have tbeen in the remodeling business for more than ten years and have tried them all. Dewalt are great as well as Makita , but for the money Ryobi is the way to go their selection of interchangable tools are top notch and I find their batteries very dependable . The 18v are my tools of choice.

You confused me when you threw cheaper into your question. Without a doubt, hilti makes the best cordless and corded tools on the market today, but they are far from cheaper. If you want cheap homeowner tools, any of the major brands mentioned by your other answerers will do, but if you are a pro, hilti is your only choice.

I buy by what I am looking for. I love my handyman magazines because they do product tests and tell you pros's and con's of what they test...they use many brands. Most are good tools...and you can only go by the warranties. I buy dewalt, craftsman's, handyman's...because I am a member I get sent specials, and also makita...plus many more...buy because you like the tool and what it can offer. Not the brand.

Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee are all good for the pros that use them on a daily basis, but for the homeowner that is only going to use them occasionally you can get some good deals on Ryobi, Craftsman.

We're all about Makita...have had nothing else but for years & years...very reliable, and well worth whatever they cost, since you don't have to replace them every other year. I have a Makita cordless screwdriver that I bought 15 years ago and it's still running great.
