Go to the beach. Eat fried clams. Hop on the commuter line into Boston. Go fishing. Go boating. Drink.

Closest "mall" is North Shore mall in Peabody (Rt114 & Rt128).

Rockport (next town over) has a touristy artsy shopping area. Rockport harbor is one of the most photographed places in New England.

North of Essex is Newburyport, which a larger town with shopping areas. Much further north, Portsmouth, NH.

Crane Beach is not far or you can go to Newburryport.
In Rockport there are lots of shops that sell paintings, gifts and antiques. You can spend an afternoon browsing
In Essex itself there are lots of places along the road you can get fried clams or scallops.
