I used to work for Mazda Bolts can appear to have been turned and washers under the water pump pulley nuts missing. All new drive belts and above are good indications that the V-6 engine belt has been changed when in doubt change it again. EGR valve problems 626 and MX-6 almost always a broken wire is causing a bad voltage signal to the computer. I would help if I had any idea what your cars year model and miles on it are.

The EGR is nothing at this point to be worried about. The timing belt is another story. Did your mechanic talk with you about changing the water pump with the timing belt? Most reputable mechanics will talk with you about replacing both at the same time. If he did not, you should have your car taken into an ASC certified shop and have them check the reapair you paid for. If they say the repairs were not made, then you need to talk to the shop you paid for them to be done and start asking lots of questions. You obviously dont trust them as you would not be asking her. So let a mechanic tell you what got done and then make the shop answer for a lie.

I suggest that you take your car to Autozone and let them run a free diagnostic. You do NOT need to place EGR valve to have a functioning car, however, your car will recycle it's exhaust and more residue will build in your motor. The EGR helps the car use it's heat from previous explosions in the piston chambers and make it easier for future explosions. A little less fuel is consumed, but again, you don't have to fix it unless your state requires you to do. For example, NJ does. Tennessee does not.

As for the timing belts, you generally have to change them in intervals. At either every 60 or 75 or 90 thousand miles. Your owner's book will tell you when you need to change your belts. Check your mileage. If you're at one of those intervals, you may need to do it soon. If you haven't had your car for a long time and you purchased it from someone else, then you need to assume that the previous owner did not change them, and you need to get them checked at your next oil change. And you MUST do it, or one day they will snap off and do serious damage to your motor.

I hope I understand you meaning of changed........if you mean has it been changed, physically, you'd have to remove enough stuff before the timing cover to get a look. If you mean "it has jumped time", it probably wouldn't start. The EGR valve can be replaced, better than telling you myself, go to your local Murray's, Autozone........when they bring you the part, ask to see the diagram.....Mazda HUH......LATER
