A rock gets worn down by the ocean over time. A mother gets grey hais from her offspring over time. Someting like that.

of course you did not give the context in which this came but I would say.
The mother is the silent strong person. And the "ocean" is the one that keeps pounding the rock and most important the water keeps returning to the rock. the rock never moves the ocean does.

never heard it before but to me it means that the mother is the strong one the one who stays in place and the ocean meaning the son leaves but always comes back to the mother. Then again it could mean that the mother the rock watches as her husband goes out and find more fish in the sea but always comes back to the rock. I guess where ever your head is it could mean a couple of different things to different people..

Not knowing the source, I can only give my own interpretation of that sentence alone.
Mother is the rock, she is firm, unwavering, steady, dependable, secure, never changing, never moving, somewhat cold, and hard.
I am the ocean, ebbing and flowing with the pull of the moon, the rotation of the earth, I change, I move, I am sometimes stormy, sometimes calm.

Hi Laura.......I had to think about this for a second but I am guessing that the mother is solid, grounded..........not necessarily perfect but sort of set in stone if you may. No need for change, already done.......finished? "I" am the ocean..........constantly moving........free........not quite finished yet. Still flowing to find a place to be a "rock." I hope this makes sense to you. I was hard to describe writing it, verbally would have been easier! (I think!) ha

A mother is steady, unwavering, supportive and always there to catch your changing wave of emotions. You are the ocean - sometimes calm, sometimes stormy. You can unleash your fury of high and strong waves at that rock, and she will always be steady and block your waves and calm you down.

it means that the harder the ocean hits or runs against the rock the rock will not move....like very mother is.

Oceans wear rocks down to sand. Therefore, the constant pounding of your waves of emotions, trials and ups and downs will gradually wear her down.

Mother is the stable force in one's life. The child is changing and moving.
