Locate ceiling joists either side of where you want the new man hole....{timbers that hold up ceiling), then mark out the size of the cut out hole (min: 400 mm X 600mm ), make sure that you do not have any wiring or piping etc. in the location, then cut out ceiling panel (gyprock etc.) with a key-hole saw or similar. (this is best done from within the roof space, don't fall through the ceiling!!!). The hole should be situated between two joists and trimmed to them, this is then covered on the ceiling side with architrave which is fitted so that it is 1cm smaller all round, this is so that it will support the infill panel or man-hole cover into from the top, this can be any material that you have ...gyprock, plywood, Masonite, etc. hope this helps.....another pointer... make sure there is good access above the new hole to get into the roof space....and also that it is accessible below for the ladder... no furniture etc. also do not have it in an unlocked outside area for security reasons....

You really don't want to make a hole into the roof (big potential for leaks). What you are asking is how to make an access hole to get up into the attic under the roof.

The most convenient is to buy a fold down set of attic stairs. They cost something near $100 and come with instructions and all of the parts. They need some simple framing work done when you cut the hole in the ceiling because you will need to cut some structural wood there and need to avoid weakening the structure.

You could instead make the opening and frame it and make a plywood board that will cover the hole and can be pushed up for access (with insulation on its attic-side).
