I used to work at a daycare. I don't remember their minimum hiring age but I do remember you had to be 18 to be left unsupervised with the children.

I've worked at an early childhood center for nearly 2 years and , in the state of Missouri, you're required to be 18 years old.

About 2 months after I began, our director hired a 16 year old. Long story short, a parent found out and threatened to report it to the state. She was gone the next day.

Actually, this is going to depend on what state you live in. Each state has their own rules and regulations for child care centers and homes. I have been a licensed child care provider in my home for 20 years in Michigan. I can have an assistant care giver as young as 14 years old, but he/she is only able to work under my direct supervision. In addition, all parents must be notified and sign a form that they are aware of the age of the assistant. You must be 18 years old to become a licensed home child care provider. A child care center can hire someone aged 17 who has completed at least one year of a vocational-occupational child-care training program approved by the state Department of Education. 18 or older requires no pre-service or in-service training. You can do a search to see what the rules are in your state. Try "the name of your state" child care centers.
