I have had him for a day and just tonight I was noticing that there are a ton of little bubbles up along the top of the water by the sides of the tank. Is this a territory thing or is he scared? He is the only one in the tank.

The first answer is incorrect. He is making a bubble nest. It's good when they do this because it means he is healthy and happy. When bettas spawn, the male will wrap his body around the females and squeeze the eggs out. As they are falling he picks them up and blows them up into his bubble nest. This keeps the eggs close to the surface and them from getting fungi. He will contiue to tend to the eggs/fry for 3 days until the fry are free swimming. I then take the males out or they will eat the babies.

Since you don't have a female, you can consider him as "just practicing".

Oh, just a little tidbit, people often pronounce them as Bait uh(spelled Beta), when actually it is pronounced bet-tuh (betta).

Bettas breath air unlike most other fish. Most fish extract oxygen from the water. When Bettas go the the water's surface, he gulps in air, and lets out the used air. That is what those little bubbles are, nothing to worry about. They will collect, but you can pop them if you get bored, to the Betta, they are just there, he doesn't care weather they are there or not. Bettas only make nests when they are given good conditions. From what it sounds like, you have yours in a bowl without a heater and filter, that is less than ideal. Normally, with a filter to disturb the water, the bubbles would pop naturally, but without the filter, they just build up and sit there. A nest will have milky white bubbles. If the bubbles are transparent, it is just air bubbles from breathing.

It's called a bubble nest. When bettas breed, the male collects the eggs and places them into the nest until they hatch. It is just what male bettas do.

That means he is happy, healthy and ready to spawn! The bubbles are his "nest".
