55 gallons is a little small and can lead to a male that is chasing the female too aggressively. Turn up the heater so the temperature is about 78-81 degrees, feed meaty foods like bloodworms, brineshrimp, and feeder fish, and wait. Don't clean the tank during this time, but be sure to do a thorough cleaning before.

You can't tell the sex of oscars by sight. Only they know. The only way to tell is if they breed or if you do a fish autopsy.

To breed oscars, you need to keep a mature group of them together until a pair divides off from the group and then they can be housed in a breeder tank.

55 is too small. For the initial group, you need something on the order of several hundred gallons, 55 may be ok for a pair that is breeding to be housed by themselves, however.
