My washing machine is about a year old, and lately it is leaving black marks on our white clothes and once they are there, I can't get them to come out even with bleach. We sort our clothes and only wash whites with whites, what could be causing this and how do I get it fixed?

I hate when that happens. I called a repair man on this one. It was oil/grease coming from something inside the tub. Don't use it again till you get it fixed. Eventually, if not already it will get on the colors to, you just don't notice the spots as easily.

It could be oil or grease leaking from a seal, deterioration of a rubber fitting, build-up of mineral deposits (e.g. manganese) or even a fungus attacking rubber parts. Check on the web site for the brand of washer, and Google the washer and model; you might find this to be a common problem.
The high-efficiency side-loading washer we recently purchased has a special cleaning cycle in the instruction manual (and it's not apparent from the control panel). That washer also seems to develop a brown film on the large rubber door gasket, perhaps leached from the rubber or deposited from iron and manganese in the water supply. Since I've started to wipe down the gasket with a bit of solvent and silicone spray lubricant on a paper towel, a lot of brown gunk has come off and clothes get streaked less often.
If the washer is ~1 year old, repairs (as opposed to routine cleaning) should be covered by warranty, so if it's a leak, it should cost nothing to fix.

I would call a repair man if your washing machine is only a year old it may still be covered under warranty. wish you luck
