They won't give you your diploma at graduation anyway, so rather than ruining it for everyone, just stay home. The diplomas get mailed later on, when all grades have been checked and they are sure you have, in fact, graduated. The answer to your original question is yes, you have to wear the gown if you go to graduation. You wear it over your clothes (please, please! I once went to a graduation where people didn't realize this and when they were told they had to turn in the gowns, all the girls started crying because all they had on underneath was their underwear!), so unless they tell you specifically what you are supposed to wear, you could wear the Hawaiian shirt and shorts underneath, since it doesn't show. However, please realize that the graduation ceremony isn't about you; it is more for your parents. I missed my college and first two graduate degree ceremonies because I didn't care; then when I went to my law school graduation, I looked at my parents' faces and kicked myself for being so selfish. It meant the world to them.

Well, I think you should wear a gown for respect. And wouldn't your friends and family be there when you graduate? Show them how proud you are of graduating and don't embarrass them by wearing something different and non traditional.
this is your one and only time you can wear a cap and gown and not get criticized for it! You can wear a hawaiian shirt and shorts ANY time! specifically when the weather permits.

Different schools have different rules and requirements for their graduations. For example, the Rhode Island School of Design students pride themselves on their creativity and show off their originality by parading to the ceremonies in their wacky personalized graduation gowns.
Something to remember is that marching in a graduation ceremony is not necessary to receive your diploma. They will happily give it to you without making you dress up and listen to speeches. Frequently Universities will actually hold a primary graduation ceremony for all students and the individual departments will hold smaller ceremonies for the students in their major area. The departmental ceremonies tend to be a bit more intimate and meaningful, as you will know most of the students and professors there.
Besides these benefits for skipping the ceremony, there might be a monetary bonus too. Some schools hold their ceremonies in venues that are not big enough for all the graduates to bring anyone they want. At my college graduation, each graduate received only 3 tickets for friends and family. As you can imagine, many people wanted more tickets so their grandparents, siblings, friends, etc. could attend as well. This resulted in a quite profitable little industry for people who did not plan to attend the ceremony or who had no guests using their tickets. Before pursuing this route, you should be sure to check your school's individual rules. Some schools forbid the selling of tickets and crack down by checking out sales on E-bay, Craigslist, bulletin boards, etc., so be sure you know with whom you do business.
If you attend a school with more serious students, you might think about respecting your fellow students' desire for a dignified ceremony celebrating their accomplishments. They might not appreciate catching your Hawaiian shirt in their pictures. Considering that it is not a requirement to attend the ceremony, if you think this might be the case at your institution you might want to respectfully decline attendance rather than going all out expressing your creative personality.
At most institutions, some playfulness is enjoyed by crazy socks and collars that will show when you are wearing your gown or with funny sayings or designs on top of your cap which can be seen by the audience who are usually seated above you.
Congratulations on your accomplishment, however you choose to celebrate it!

They care. There's no way they'll let you walk down like that. You could have all that under your gown and then bolt out, take the gown off, and party hearty.
