Is there anywhere I can adopt a star for free online?

When you adopt a star with a company, you pay $50 or whatever to get that star listed in THEIR book as your own with whatever name you choose. Then you've gotta buy the book to see your name on that star. In all likely-hood, another company has already sold the same star with a different name to someone else. No astronomer will refer to it with the name you gave it and if you ask someone at an observatory to show it to you, its probably some incredibly small, faint star that you need a large telescope to see.
To answer your question, no one is going to let you name a star and send you a book with your name on it along with thousands of other stars with others' names for free. Paper costs money and the $50 goes to paying for that book.
Do not adopt a star, as it's just a scam albeit a profitable one.

No it costs like $50 bucks though which is practically nothing. Because someone has to pay for keeping track of who "owns" which star. On the flip side, however, you can name a star whatever you want (which is basically all adopting a star is) for free, and no one can stop you.

It doesn't really name the star - for instance, a scientist is never going to refer to a star by the name someone gives it - i.e.: "Looks like the star 'ScottLuvsJennie4Evah' is cycling into the white dwarf phase of existence" . It is however a sweet gesture, not to mention ridiculously lucrative.
