Do it like FOIL: (-5 - 2i)(-5 - 2i) =

25 + 10i + 10i + 4i^2

i^2 is -1 so 4i^2 is -4
Combine like terms: 25 + -4 = 21

10i+10i=20i

So 21 + 20i

So it's (-5-2i) x (-5-2i) .... just FOIL it.

-5 x -5 = 25
-5 x -2i = 10i
-2i x -5 = 10i
-2i x -2i = -4 (since it would be 4i^2 and i^2 = -1)

So it's 21 + 20i

(-5-2i)^2
= (-5)^2 +2(-5)(-2i) + (-2i)^2
= 25 + 20i - 4
= 21 + 20i
