you have two fans in an ac unit one inside called evaporator fan,and one outside called the condenser fan, make sure that they are both running, problem #1dirty outdoor condenser ,clean it.#2 condenser fan not running all the time check condenser fan and capacitor.#3low freon charge.#4 dirty filter,if you don"T know how to check this parts call for service, just because the ac is 10 years old ,does not mean that you have to get a new one.get a couple of estimates on repair and a reputable ac company, there are a lot of shysters out there.also the wires compressor connections might be burnt, they have to be replaced.dirty contactor.

check if the outdoor unit has any resetable low or high pressure controls. also the run capacitor may have failed. check all wiring connections at the compressor as well as the rest of the wiring connections in the electrical section.if the system has lost refrigerant it could lock out the compressor.there are other causes but this may help. Good Luck!!

I think I would check the compressor motor capacitor. They are subject to failing. Of course you have to be getting current to the capacitor so you might want to check that first. ...good Luck...

I suggest you check the breaker. Sometimes, the two will be on separate breakers. Also, you may have a thermostat that is bad. However, it sounds to me like you need a new compressor.

Check to see if the coils have ice on them. If so let them unthaw. You may need a new air filter.
