Have been residents at an apartment for 13 years. Always paid on time, no complaints. Only asked for simple maintance to make sure that living is healthy (when faucets have brown water, etc.)

Landlord started screaming at me to get out and move out of the building. told him it was unacceptable to say this. landlord said he wanted to hit me.

This happened to a very close friend of mine.
What are some legal actions that should be taken?
Also, do you think that he could become more violent?
What are some possible legal punishments for him?

Any other ideas, please let me know.

the man who threatened her is the owner of the building-the single owner.
and her lease does not expire because by her city's code of law.

my friend did nothing.
the man came to look at what needs to be fixed. she showed him that the water was brown. he started screaming at her to leave this apt building, to get out.
she told him he couldn't tell her that.
then he screamed at her that he wanted to hit her.

The landlord can only evict your friend for violations of the lease -- but unless there is a clause otherwise, the landlord can always refuse to renew the lease when it expires.

As far as the threats, your friend can get a restraining order against the landlord (as an individual, not against any representative of whoever owns the property) based on the threat of violence.

A restraining order can only be issued if there is a criminal offense being threatened and you feel threatened at the time.

You may not be able to do anything at all. That alone just won't be enough in most places. However, I do suggest you consult an attorney near you.

You haven't told us what your friend did to make the landlord scream.
