Screwed up on this the first time.

My fish was a sapphire blue, but now it's a light purple.

And earlier the skin around its head flared out like a maine on a lion, are they suppose to do that?

And also it was swimming all crazy around the tank like it was scared.

The flaring is called, flaring. It is when it pushes its gills out to appear more intimidating. Its color will lighten if sick or stressed, change completely if it is healthy and aging, or lose its color when it is dying of old age. It sounds like it is very stressed. Leave the lights off and don't bother it for a while. It may be in too small of a container, or if it has tankmates, they may be nipping the Betta and stressing it out.

It was flaring its gills out to try and scare something away. If there are any other fish near him or a mirror that might cause him to get so angry

wel if its in with other fish (specialy others with nice fins) it might mistake as another betta and try to attck it its normal he just feels threatend dont listen to other poeple saying that bettas should be lone fish they are happy as long as no other fish is harrasing them i had 2 bettas in a 30 gallon tank yes they had their diff at first but after that they litteraly swam next to each other without getting exited
