An outright ban on all smoking, anywhere would unenforcible, as there are still too many smokers. The Anti-smoking lobby adopt a salami-slice approach of which the latest ban is the latest example.Every year the screw is tightened a little more. If these measures are effective in persuading more and more smokers to stop, then there must come a time when the numer of remaining smokers reaches a critical mass. (I do not know what this number might be but I am sure it exists). Then, The manufacture, purchase and possession of tobacco products will be made illegal. Smokers unite! There is safety in numbers.

I am pretty much indifferent to the smoking band. I believe that people should be allowed to do what they want, and the govedrnment goes against this belief alot (for example prohibition of harmless substances and legalisation of more dangerous ones), but the smoking ban stops smoking in public places that would otherwise infringe on the non smokers right, who through no decision of their own have their health compromised.

The ban protects people from passive smoking, but still gives people the right to smoke. I doubt that was the sole agenda of the government, but it is the affect it gives.

we shouldn't but we will, we British are a load of push overs, do you know were probably the only country in the world that don't mind been filmed continuously, we have spent millions more on ctv than even America, not only are they filming us smoking in the streets but now they also have the ability to tell us over a speaker system to pick our discarded cigarette but up. Any body fancy a rebellion?

Because banning smoking would be counter-productive. Ban something and it goes into the hands of criminals. Cigarettes would therefore be cut with all sorts of unsavoury stuff - making them more unhealthy, and of course stopping the government getting any revenue from them.

support the ban -- maybe we should put it on the level of
mary jane and outlaw growing the crop, we may need to
figure a way to stabilize the economy and employment
in the states growing the crop (see how successful we
are in Michigan with the auto industry in jeopardy)

Good idea. Also ban cars, air travel, spitting, fast food, religion, sunbathing, cheap imports, loud noises, staying up too late…the list is endless. You're on a winner. There are so many things that are bad for people. Just legislate against all of them!

everyone who believes in freedom should ignore bans on legal products, that took away bar owners rights to decide for their customers and that is so wrong. The liberals would not compromise so why follow this ban?

Gov't won't ban it completely. They (federal, state, local) make more money off the sale of each pack than the tobacco companies do.
