There are certain dangers to long-term and heavy consumption of aspartame. However, drinking diet coke will not leave you getting radiation treatments any time soon.

There are scores of websites and blogs about "testimonials" of people who have a grudge because it was supposedly not properly tested by the US Food and Drug Administration. However, I would like to see a peer-reviewed article in a respected medical journal that proves it is actually a toxic substance.

Be careful to do the research and decide for yourself what an acceptable level of intake is. There is so much debate around this question and quite a bit of mis information.

A connection between aspartame and cancer has not been scientifically proven in spite of research. Some people believe that it does. If it had been proven, it seems likely that it would have been taken off the market as a sugar substitute, as it has already happened with other sugar substitutes like cyclamates.

Some people also say it worsens symptoms of ADHD, this apparently has not been scientifically proven.

The main health precaution is for people with a rare metabolic disorder called Phenylketonuria (PKU), they cannot digest the amino acid Phenylalanine. People with the disorder often have mental retardation, epilepsy, behavior problems. Aspartame contains phenylalanine. If someone with PKU takes aspartame it can cause serious nerve/brain damage.

I have heard some peole say it causes them to have headaches. This does appear to be true for some people.

Although I have not seen any solid evidence that it causes serious health problems for anyone who doesn't have PKU, it strikes me as a non-food item and I would rather not consume things that contain it. The people who complain of headaches--that makes me wonder.

At temperatures over 86 degrees Fahrenheit the aspartame changes into formic acid, the same chemical that causes fire ant bites to burn. If you've never been bitten by one, it burns a lot and causes a boil!

Well, the average person's body temp is about 98 degrees.

In the first Gulf war, many pallets of aspartame laced soft drinks sat in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. Now we have many soldiers with severe illnesses that are termed Gulf War Syndrome ("Syndrome" is the medical term that means "A constellation of signs and symptoms we don't know the cause of.")

Good luck and be well.

I have heard (television interviews with naturopathic healers) that it literally burns out brain cells, similar to LSD. I have also heard that it causes severe headaches and dizzy spells. (I wonder if this is why Alzheimers is so prevalent when it never used to be?)

I have not used it in over 30 years because when it first came out I started getting severe migraines and dizzy spells -- when they started happening when I was driving (and I always had a diet coke when I was driving from NYC to Phila.), I decided to stop drinking the stuff. Headaches stopped. Dizzy spells stopped. Aspartame has no place in my life.
