We have a 2002 pontiac grand am SE. The trac off light comes on and it shifts hard and sometimes dies? Any ideas

When the engine gets an error code, it can turn off the traction control. Stop at the local parts store and ask them to scan the computer for error codes. This is usually a free service from parts stores such as Auto Zone, Advance Auto and others.

Your 2002 Grand Am does not have a transmission dipstick. The only way to check the fluid level is to remove a small plug on the right side of the transmission (from underneath the car) and then pour fluid into the top cap until it dribbles out the other plug.

This transmission is not intended for amateur maintenance. Take it to a dealer for a diagnosis.
