I've heard that you really raise your chances of getting into one of those Ivy League schools if you have connections. So I do go about getting these connections?

If you are in the process of applying, it is too late to develop appropriate connections. Basically, what this means is that if you are the child of an alumnus, or if your family has friends who can write your recommendations who are prominent people, you have some advantage. It doesn't mean that if you know someone at the university, you have a better chance. I don't think you can really create this if it isn't already the case. The good news is that this only gives you a slight advantage, and if you are really good, you can make do without it. Realize that the vast majority of people at any of the Ivies did not get there based on their connections, but on their qualifications - otherwise, the universities themselves would lose their appeal. Who would want to spend four years at a school populated by a bunch of dumb kids whose parents had important friends? They exist, but they are not the majority.

This means the president, not normal people. I got in, and I was a poor NYC girl with no connections. Study your butt off, that's how you get to the Ivies.

Hmm, well I suggest taking a summer course at the school and get to know the professors, get involved any way you can. Also, if they provide e-mails, e-mail them about what they teach, and how the enjoy their job etc. Get to know the head dean, find out if he has kids and "accidentally'" meet up with them, and become really good friends! Oh, good grades won't hurt either

I feel, unfortunately this does happen. Some school appear to look at "who" writes application letters, etc. Who calls up and states a name/s.

Find out if there are any alumni in your area. They seem to be a good resource.

Is there someone who knows someone who knows.........

Ask for a contact from the alumni organization.

Let it be known where you would like to go to college at. Many times when you aren't looking, that is when something/one appears.
