Why is it when your married theirs nothing that says you have to send your children to college, but when you divorce the courts make you send your kids to college?

It's called being a responsible parent. If you don't want to do your share, maybe you should have kept your pants on 18 years ago. Where I live, each parent pays 1/3 and the student pays the other 1/3, usually on a student loan. I had to take my ex to court to make him ante up & darned glad I did. We have two successful college graduates now, and he is as proud of them as I am. Try to focus on the future & do your part.

you people are missing her point.Nowhere does it say that parents have to pay for their childrens college education.There is a thing called student loans,scholarships and grants that cover these costs.If a kid graduates school and enters into college then legaly it is his/her responsibility to see that the school gets paid.Usually this is done with student loans and the others mentioned.When the student graduates college the unpaid bill is his/her responsibility and not the parents.I agree with the user.Why should the father or mother who has to pay child support be responsible for paing the childs tuition just because there was a divorce? I can understand the child support part but not the rest and I also want to add to this...Many schools are going to online courses or only require classes a couple of times a week.Shouldn't child support be based on this as well since that person can not only go to school but can also hold down a fulltime job?

The courts dont. They just want to make sure the same opportunity is there to go to college as there is in a normal married family for the kids and that it is an equally shared responsibility for both parents too.

Fathers who have the financial means to send their children for further education have the responsibility to do so whether they are married to the mother or not. Good for the courts!!

The courts don't MAKE you send your kid's to college, however just like married parents they do expect you to pay your kid's tuition if the child CHOOSES to go to college. My ex husband pays my daughter's tuition, I pay for her books. IF we were still married we would be paying her college tuition as well as for her books...there is no difference. Of course if you would rather you child be stuck behind a McPuke's counter for the rest of her/his life saying "would you like fries with that" for minimum wage don't encourage your child to go to college.

They aren't making you send them but making sure you pay for it. If your child doesn't go then you have nothing to worry about but if they decide to they would like both or one parent to make sure the tuition gets paid.

i dont think they make you. but in some states if the child DECIDES to go then the man has to continue support til the age of 23 or they drop out.
