Hi.
Why don't you take him to the emergency room, and have some ex-rays taken?

You don't say how old your son is so I'll guess about 9yrs. At this age his bones wont have fully formed yet. Children's bones don't fully form until they are teenagers and while they are young their bones are mostly made of cartilage which has more flexibility than fully formed bone. However there is a bone at the base of the thumb called the scaphoid which is often injured in hyper-extension type injuries. That is bending your thumb too far back. Watch and see if he is using his hand as usual or if he is unable to grip things. If he behaves as usual and doesn't still favour it, the likely hood is it's probably OK. But the best advice is to take him to accident and emergency, who have access to x-ray facilities to aid diagnosis. That's the only way you'll know for sure and avoid any future problems with his wrist. There they can also immobilise his wrist in a plaster, if it needs to be, to help it heal.

If he can move his hand around all different ways, then he will be perfectly fine. If it only hurts when he moves it a certain direction, then he's sprained something, but it'll go away within a week or so, if that long. Also, how long did it take before it started hurting? If it hurt really badly at the beginning and immediately started to swell, then it might be broken. Another possibility is that he fractured or cracked the bone, which would have caused pain about ten to fifteen seconds after the accident.

Yes, he could have what is known as a compression fracture which means all the body weight was placed on the wrist when he landed on it for balance. Or, he could have a dislocation. Broken does not always mean a displaced bone or misalignment. The only safe way to check it is to have it xrayed. In the meantime, put ice on it for 10 minutes every hour, no heat.

There are many small bones in the hand, and wrist fractures don't always cause deformities. I would have him checked out at an ER.

It definitely could be broken. I did a similar thing with my arm last year (fell, had no swelling or bruising and normal mobility) and it had a hairline fracture in it. It's best to get him x-rayed to be sure.

could be, but it also could be 'cracked' which is often seems to be more painfull than broken. But that really really hurts (I've been told by familie members and school mates who had had broken bones and 'cracked' ones) Just watch him, if it keeps to be painfull it can't hurt to visit a docter (or hospital)

its prolly bruised up. no worries. I had that with my ankle in cheerleading. Now I just have a little bruise thats all. Maybe try putting ice on it so it will clear up easier.
