Ok my Mom is 60 years old and does some chores around my cousins house when they are on vacation. She takes care of pool, gets mail, and takes care of the fish pond. Well she did this for 2 weeks. When they got back they didn't even offer her any money or a tshirt. Not that my Mom expects anything but it;s common courtesy you think?

Yes, that was rude. She should reconsider doing it again.

Yeah. Common courtesy says you show appreciation for someone watching YOUR house while you're on vacation. I'd have been rather ticked at a t-shirt frankly, but this doing nothing is even worse.

Gratitude goes a long way - so does rudeness. Good luck to them, getting somebody to take care of their house next time.

If your cousins asked her to do all those things, then yes, it was rude of them not to offer her anything in return, even something simple as a meal out or invite your mom over for dinner. Money seems a bit over the top and a tshirt a bit tacky, maybe?

If your mom offered to do all those things, it still would've been nice of them to offer her something, but if I offer to do something for others, I don't expect something in return. Getting something back in return would just be a bonus.

Yeah, and just plain selfish!
If there's a love relationship between
your Mom and the cousins perhaps
she wouldn't take money, but they
should have brought back a nice gift
for her, took her out for an evening,
or SOMETHING!
I can't believe how stingy and small
some people are.

It certainly would be common decency, but you cant force people to be polite or thoughtful. It probably affected you more than it did your mom. Why not ask these relatives to take care of your house while you're on vacation and treat them the same way. I know-you wouldnt do that-but it's a thought.

Well, money would be kind of insulting. It's like saying, "Thanks for serving us, here's some payment." It ignores the sentiment behind her actions. What they should have done was to take her to a nice dinner, or (I agree) bring back at least some nice souvenirs.

There's not really much you can do, though, because asking for stuff in return for doing a favor is also pretty bad etiquette. It's like your mom did the favor in order to get something in return, not because she wanted to help out.

It does sound cheap. I don't know that offering money is the way to go though, that's so impersonal. I think some time spent, take her out to dinner, let her know with that how much her care meant.

Yes, they should pay her something for it. I did a big favor for someone and didn't get paid either. Because someone I knew was bankrupt and didn't want her lottery winnings taken, I claimed the ticket and paid the taxes on it and didn't get one red cent. Lesson for your mom - tell her to refuse next time.

It was quite thoughtless. They should have brought her back a present from their trip. Why don't you do something special for her and tell her it is because she does so many things for others. Then, call your cousins and tell them how you feel about it. Trifling is the word for their behavior.

It's not horrible etiquette. I would put them in the class of being CHEAP! They could ask her out to dinner etc.

It is horrible. Tell them to hire a house sitter next time
