Ms. stands for....I know Mrs. =a married women and Miss= single women. The only conclusion I could come up with was that Ms. stands for a divorced women whom has not re-married. If anyone knows I'd love to hear from ya. Thank you.

Ms. would be used when you are unsure if they are a Mrs. or Miss. It could be used for a divorces or widowed woman as well. Some women use it when they jut don't care to reveal either way.

Ms stands for any women who doesn't want to be identified as being either married or single.

For the Florida "paralegal" I've been Ms since I was 25 years old, which encompasses the 23 years I was married as well MS does not equal married OR single.

What do you call a man who is single? Mr. What do you call a man who is married? Mr.

Back in the 70's the feminists wanted a label for women similiar to Mr. so instead of Miss or Mrs. they came up with Ms. which does not reflect marital status. It is used, but seemingly without thought, as both men and women think it still reflects non-marriage:(

I thought Ms. is used when you don't want anyone to know if your married or single but the divorced idea sounds good too.

Well I always thought that Ms. was the same thing as saying Miss, but I guess people just don't have the time to acually spellout miss so they just keep it short and sweet by saying or spelling Ms.

Ms. was created as an equivalent to Mr. on the theory that a man's name doesn't have to signal his marital status, so why not a similar term for women.

While you may not care for the women's-libbiness of the term, it can be mighty handy when you have to write a business letter to a woman whose marital status you don't know.

So, no, Ms does not = Miss or Ex-Mrs. It indicates a woman, marital status unstated.

I think Ms. is starting to replace Miss in these modern times. It's for any woman who isn't married yet but is already out of the schoolroom.
