i think one of your variables is wrong, when worked out

-8x+8+10x=2x+1
8+2x=2x+1
8=1 which is not true?

Hey there!

Here's the answer.

-8x+8+10x=2x+1 --> Write the problem.
-8x+10x+8=2x+1 --> Gather the x terms together and the constant terms together.
2x+8=2x+1 --> Add -8x and 10x.
8=1 Subtract 2x on both sides of the equation.

Since 8 does not equal to 1, the solution is false. So the answer is no solution.

Hope it helps!

8 + 10x - 8x = 2x + 1
8 + 2x = 2x + 1
There is an error in the question becuse
2x + 1 cannot equal 2x + 8

Consider the = sign to be the pivot point on a scale, AND THE SCALE IS PERFECTLY BALANCED.
You can manipulate the "things" on the scale, so long as you don't unbalance the scale. Mathematically, this means adding subtracting multiplying or dividing the pan on one side of the scale to isolate or simplify a term, it being understood (and this is crucial) that whatever math operation you do to one side of the scale, you do it to the other side as well.

Adding and subtracting are straight-forward. Multiplying and dividing can easily lead to trouble.
One must multiply or divide EVERYTHING on the pan, not just one "thing" on the pan.

Now for your question:
-8x+8 + 10x = 2x + 1

Combine like terms on the left side of the = sign. This gives +2x + 8 = 2x + 1
Now subtract 2x from the right side. You get this:
2x+8 -2x =2x-2x +1. Combine like terms,
+8=+1 Which is rubbish.

Your example told me what you wanted help with. You were unlucky enough to haul a lousy example out of the air.
Good luck!

Give a man 1 fish , he eats for a Day , teach a Man to fish He eats for a lifetime.

Most of the answers given to this poor guy have been blunt and non inquisitive , that isnt of any help.

Sir you have a Child , and his homework is different than when we were kids , ( my kid is 12 )
I think you need this site .

Do the homework just as if you were back in school , because the work isnt going to get easier , it will get more complicated , and if you understand at least the principals involved , and remind yourself of the math you new back then , you will not only be of more help , but will raise the "Dad" status up quite a few notches .

10x-8x+8=2x+1
2x+8=2x+1
This can never happen to be true.
Equals have got to be equal.

From kudu's result we see that the statement is false for all values of x hence the solution set is the null set.
