You are lucky the police were not called since you would be charged with petit larceny and would have a criminal record. However, if they recovered the property and it can be sold again, he may be blackmailing you, which is criminal, also known as extortion. But, if the product cannot be sold and the money is being given to WalMart directly, not the guy, I would pay it. The courts can make you pay restitution for the items as well as a civil fine for essentially making WalMart spend their time prosecuting you. Hopefully you learned a lesson.

If the police weren't involved then count your blessings. All
you'll need to do is pay the $150 fine and none of this will
be placed on a criminal record. So, pay the fine; avoid accumulating a criminal record and discontinue to pursue
a career as a thrill-seeking kleptomaniac.

That is weird that they didn't call the police. I am thinking that maybe you don't have a criminal record, and consider yourself lucky. Many, many years ago I stole some condoms from Albertson's, and not only was I arrested and sent to jail, I was sued by them for $200.00 about a month later. I had a criminal record and got it sealed, since it was a one time offense. Call the courthouse and ask them if you do.

How can the store fine you $150? Wouldn't something like paying a fine have to go through the court? If not, they could say you ran a cart into another cart and scratched it, now you have to pay a fine. That BULLS**T! Call the local courts and ask them how that works. Wally World sucks anyway!

Well you could refuse and see if he calls the police, or just pay him and book. What he's doing isn't legal, but neither was what you were doing. If he doesn't call the police, you won't have a record, and if he does call the police after he blackmailed you, he could get arrested for it.

depends on how old you are. As a juvenile your record get's sealed when you turn 18. If your over 18, yes, if you where charged (cited by the cops) you will have a record.

Consider the $150.00 the price of doing business, albeit monkey business. You are lucky to have to deal with the "guy", instead of the police. And finally, grow up!
