Well, it was good for the united America of today that the country includes all the states. It would have been difficult to do some of the things we have done as the USA if we had been a group of independent countries like Europe. So, I am glad that the country is all one piece.
Having said that, the President and the northern states failed the country by allowing the conditions to exist that caused the South to secede. And the South would have won the war, IF they had fought like the north fought. That is against civilians. The South did their best not to harm Yankee civilians, while the north prided themselves on destroying farms, churches, and court houses. Sherman's march to the sea was horrible, but no worse than Sheridan's destruction of crops and homes in Virginia. The same Phil Sheridan prosecuted the same type warfare against the American Indians after the Civil War was over.
I suspect that if the north had tried to get along and let the South secede, that some years later, the same states would have rejoined the union when it became clear that it was in their interest to do so.
Btw, the war was NOT fought over slavery and Lincoln tried to let the South keep their slaves, but stay in the union. It is true that abolishists were a great deal of the problem. But, the Yankee soldiers were NOT happy to be fighting a war they saw as to free slaves.

There was no reason to fight it. Invading the Confederate States was an illegal war, absent of all Constitutionality. Abraham Lincoln said in 1848 that any State had the right to withdraw from the Union if the government did not suit their needs.
I've been called a Civil War revisionist by a lot of people but I'm sick of it. I can honestly say that it may have been for the better that we lost. And today, I am a proud American. But I get sick of how people tarnish the names of my forefathers. And I will always stand and defend the cause they fought for.
More deaths in one war than all the others combined up until Vietnam, and for what? Abraham Lincoln's right to be called an American hero? No, it was not worth so many pointless deaths.

I assume you mean that the south would have been allowed to secede without a fight. I would love to know what life would be like now and how the rest of the states would have ended up, a 3rd country or some join the US and others the Confederacy. I think it would allow for people to live in a place more suited to their beliefs.

The after-effects? The direct after-effects is a doubling in the size of the country, and a prohibition against racial discrimination. Both worthy accomplishments.
But the US Civil War was inevitable -- to different ideologies (federalism vs. confederacy). It was inevitable that someone who try to push the line, and someone else would try to pull out of the agreement to be a country.
Any time you have a massive political difference of opinion, you have the potential for civil war.
The only reason we haven't had one in the US in the past decade is that the vast majority of Americans are too lazy and too complacent to actually stand up and demand change. So, they just accept what the powers-that-be do without much more than tame grumbling.

Well, I am glad because otherwise I and my fellow African Americans would be working 24/7 in some cotton fields for some racist rednecks in the South and being physically and emotionally abused.

Yes. The barbarism and aristocratic spirit of the southern rebels had to be crushed. Sometimes I wonder if the dispute could have been solved without war, but I doubt it.
