Actually, the saying is: A wet bird never flies at night. A wet bird flying in the cool night air would freeze to death. Either he missed a word, or he didnt. If he didnt, that would mean he wanted to die.I think that your grandfather was telling you that he commited suicide either on purpose or on accident.

I looked up cliches and it said "A wet bird NEVER flies at night" Maybe grandpa left out a very important word. That would certainly make a difference. No? Though I still have no clue what it means.

I haven't the foggiest, but just guessing, I'd say that a wet bird would have difficulty flying as the water could weigh down its wings, although I believe the feathers are waterproof. So acting on that theory of weighing the wings down, the bird couldn't fly very well, so it would fly at night when it can't be seen. But what your grandfather was saying, is that if you have something to be ashamed of, you would hide it under the cover of darkness. I dunno -- this is just a guess and not written in stone.
