I mean writing a book takes a long time I would assume, and during that time I would also assume the writer would need an ample amount of time each day to get a book finished. So my question is do they get a side job? what do they do to support themselves in the meantime?

Good question. As you'd expect, the answer is, "It depends."

Many authors start small, and write books while they are working on other jobs -- writing or not. That's what I did for a book coming out this fall. Some people do a number of freelance jobs in order to keep some cash flow coming in while writing.

Then there are the big projects. Let's take Robert Caro, who wrote "The Power Broker." He quit his job as a newspaper reporter to spend years on the book, living on a very small advance from the publisher and on his wife's income. The book finally came out, and was an instant classic. He then moved on to a series of books on Lyndon Johnson. Caro received royalties on the first book, plus a much healthier advance on the second book. So he could afford to do the third book pretty easily. And so on. If the books are good enough and stay in print (see David McCullough), life becomes comfortable quickly. But there aren't many McCulloughs out there.
