Most researchers believe that people who are blind from birth or who become blind in infancy do not see in their dreams. They do not retain visual imagery because it was never acquired in the first place.
However, those blinded in childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, or afterwards usually do see in their dreams. "They often retain visual imagery in their waking life and in their dreams," according to Drs Nancy Kerr of the Department of Psychology at Oglethorpe University and G. William Domhoff of the Department of Psychology at the University of California at Santa Cruz.
They write in the December 2004 issue of Dreaming that "individuals blinded before the age of about five report no visual imagery in dreams as adults, whereas those blinded after about the age of seven are likely to retain visual imagery in dreaming".
This conclusion is based upon four sleep laboratory studies conducted between 1966 and 1999. According to the Royal National Institute of the Blind in London: "Dreams are experienced in the same way as life is lived. If someone loses their sight, they will dream of events during the days when sight was available in visual terms. If dreams are about recent events when sight was not used, sensations will be in terms of sound, smell, texture, and so on." A person dreams as they live.

That's a great question! I guess it would depend on when they became blind. You would think they would dream in some kind of imagery but it might be quite different. They would only be able to shape their world based on sounds and noises and so the dreams might well be very different. I don't really know. I am just grateful for all 5 of my senses and glad that I can dream. THough, when I dream I can never wake up. It's like I go down deep into the middle of the earth and nothing will wake me up until the dream is over.

I guess it'd depend on if they were born blind at birth, or whether they'd become blind later in life (through a condition or an accident).
Cause if they were blinded later in life then their brain would contain images of the world that they have already seen and therefore when they dream, these images would manifest themselves so I guess they could be able to see things.

It depends on whether they were blind from birth or not. If they've never seen the world, then they would see what they think the world looks like, based on their other 4 senses. If they became blind over time, then they would dream how they saw the world before going blind.

Wow, I never even thought of that. Maybe if they went blind later in life because they once saw those images ,but I don't think someone who was born blind sees what regular people see when they dream.

" Yes, blind people do dream. What they see in their dreams depends on how much they could ever see. If someone has been totally blind since birth, they only have auditory dreams. If someone such as I, has had a measure of sight, then that person dreams with that measure of sight. I still dream as though I can see, colors included. For people I've met since, their faces are just blurs or how I imagine they look. To me, someone like my mother looks forever 30. "

That's a good question. I'd have to say that I think a person that wasn't born blind would still see in their dreams, i dont know about a person who was born blind though.

I have often wondered the same thing. If a person became blind later in life, it is no problem. He simply draws from his memories.
However, I don't know about those who are born blind. Even if the eyes do not work, one can assume that they still "see" something because of the activity in their visual cortex. They probably see random shapes and colours the same way we do when our eyes are closed.

If they were born blind they would dream in music, sounds, and noises... and possibly touch.
If they weren't born blind then yes they'd see images.
