This government doesn`t know what they`re doing by wanting to build all this extra housing, and some of it on green belt land. What happens when these houses aren`t enough? Where and when do you stop? I think we have to curb the population growth somehow before this situation has a detrimental affect on us all.

I don't think it's a question as to whether we care or not care. It's just that people have so many more issues that they have to deal with on a daily basis that they can some what control or at least try to control. And even if we could make a difference there will always be something else more critical or damaging that will surface. It's just the way of the world. The bottom line is the government or anyone else can please all of the people all of the time. what might be good for one may be harmful for the next.

It might help if rich people stopped buying 2nd homes, which they use for holidays and no one's in it for 90% of the year. That's never good for the economy.

But its a fact that a healthy society will always have population growth, unless there are laws to limit the number of children (such as in china, but people still ahve more than one, but only the first is recognised by the government)

Gorden Brown seems determined to make the UK housing market crash. However, it'll be good for someone like me who hopes to get onto the housing ladder in the next few years.

Our governments keep going on about how WE need to save the environment when its THEY who need to make sure builders make houses environmentally friendly. My parents house was built 10 years ago (they bought it 3 yrs ago), so by government standards it SHOULD have had good insulation, but in the winter the snow outside melted near where the radiators were inside. That disgusts me.

More housing is inevitable, but the damage could be limited in the governments really tried.

That's my view :)

thats true,, but we cant sop the growing population, because thats just stupid, what we need to do is to promote nuclear energy in all countries.

even though some environmentalists say that its a load of rubbish,, nuclear energy is actually very safe and very efficient. it is better than what some countries are doing at the moment and burning coal for energy which is pollutant to the air.

and yes of course we can avoid more damage to the environment if we all work together to stop it. things like driving your car less, and using less electricity can help stop burning a lot of coal into the atmosphere and stuff like that. Also promote nuclear energy as it is very efficient and clean.

I'll tell you what damages the environment, the muesli eating, tree hugging, greenies who insist on buying "organic" fruit and veg flown into Tesco's from the four corners of the earth and wearing clothes made of hemp hand sewn by someone in Outer Mongolia - again, flown in. Don't even get me started on their camper vans chucking out smoke.

No we can't! Simply because some people try to exploit everything for their own ends. Look at the recent worldwide pop concert where celebrities (who leave a bigger carbon footprint than most people) tried to lecture us on a greener way of life, while promoting their latest album...

I think one of the big big things that need done is to stop extending utilities, fire and police protection, and new roads to all these outlying developments. You get ABC Company building their huge factory 20 miles out from Big City, usually in a pasture behind the big milk barn, and Big City widens the road for them, strings in electric, phone and cable, pipes in gas and water, and gives them a tax break. Then Mr. Developer comes and buys up the rest of the farm and the woodlands beside it and builds 20 ticky-tack houses for the employees of ABC. Big City then sets up towers for their electric, tears up the land to bring in gas and water, gives them the city police and fire protection (which the new homeowners don't pay for) rips out the woodland and builds a shopping center so the people don't have to shop in Big City anymore. Then widens the road. Eventually the area increases until it becomes a village and then a town and then a city of its own. Taxes rise so that ABC is taking a loss, so they move 20 miles outside the city limits....
The only way to stop it is to forbid the companies from building out in the county to avoid taxes, stop giving them the tax breaks and stop extending utilities to them. If Mr. Bigbucks wants to build his McMansion out in the boonies, it's on him to provide for fire and security since he's not paying tax to Big City. Put a limit on how much land can be used for development. And don't put in newer better roads unless they pay into the street funds for everyone.
Really, it's so simple. Stop catering to out-of-town building.

Tell that to the homeless and displaced. The one basic thing a human being should have a right to is a roof over their head.

There's lots of people and there's going to be more so why not build houses for them to live in? I don't know how you think we're going to avoid more people unless we sterilise everyone now!
