It was found in our bucket of old bird seed. It has the small body of a flea but has 6 tiny thin legs and a long mouth. It looks as though it's a cross between an ant and a fly but has no wings.

Off the top of my head, it is one of three insects....

a weevil, in which case the the mouth would be slightly curled...

an assasin bug....the body would be quite noticeably to large for the mouth....

or, and most likely, a....forget the name...be right back while I look it up...

...ok, best I can tell, what I was thinking of was yet another example of one of the many weevils out there.

It is a Weevil. It was in the birdseed because the species is a:
(Seed Weevil) Seed Weevils as you know feed on seeds of all sorts. Birdseed, sunflowerseed, pumkinseed and so on.

I hope this information is useful.

It sounds like a weevil of some sort. It wouldn't be a fruit fly (no wings), and I'd bet you'd know a mosquito if you saw (or felt) one.

I think it's most likely a type of weevil.

It fits your description and most weevils like to eat grain.

I would name this bug Oscar. It sounds like an Oscar to me and Oscar is probably not a name that your friends have so when you refer to it folks won't think you're talking about one of your friends. Yep, I'd name it Oscar.
