ME !!!!!!!!!!

DOES NOT APPEAL TO ME AT ALL

Most people have not read them, seen the film or heard of them. But the media has it portrayed differently. Big sales too as the few people who buy the book buy them in dozens. Remember its a childrens book. I am among those proud people who can say they have not read the books or seen the films. I was in China recently wishing to buy a english speaking dvd. There was only one english speaking film left as the other english speaking films had been bought. It was a Harry Potter film. Proudly I walked away. Better none than this one I decided. I feel better still thinking about it.

I haven't read any or seen any - mainly because my initial prejudice over the first book was that it was a pastiche / amalgam of every decent children's book ever written - C.S.Lewis's Narnia / boarding school stories such as Bunter at Greyfriars / Enid Blyton - The Chalet School / mythological constructions such as Lord of the Rings and Titus Groan - this didn't turn me off but the paragraph I read did.

However, the world can't be wrong - children love the books - the author seems like a decent human being with a strong narrative thrust - it must be me. I know that.

I should read them all but... there's something about the names of the characters that just irritates me and stops me from committing myself to reading them - if I had children, I would have read them out loud long ago and have an opinion on them, but I don't, so I haven't -

I think you are :)

Go and take the first one out of the library. It's a very quick read and if you like it continue, if you hate it stop. If you're unsure then keep going - it gets better! I have to say, the third book is when you get your first taste of the good backstory that continues throughout the later books, so I'd tell you to hang in until you finish the third book and then if you decide it's not for you then stop reading and at least you gave it a shot.

The movies are OK, but the books are much better!

I haven't. All my friends are obsessing over it (right now they are basically nonexistant because they are so busy reading the newest book). I don't want/need another thing that sucks up all my time right now. It probably is really good writing and an awesome storyline but... just not for me.
Besides, it's pretty controversial where I live, in a small, conservative town. Maybe someday when it's assigned as summer reading to my kids I'll check it out.

we had all heard about Harry Potter on the news and everything, my mom picked up #1 at Costco just to find out what everyone was talking about.
The next day (fast reader) she went and bought the second....from then it was a VERY FAST addiction, and we have all gotten our own copies when it comes out.
As for the movies, well, one and two were great, three and four were LOUSY, and the new one IS WONDERFUL, and we came out of the theatre wanting to see it again (but we're cheap,we'll wait for the holiday DVD of it and buy it)
Yes, if you have not gotten these books, because you always need to read the books before the movies, and for some movies(#3,4 of these books) INSTEAD of the movies, YOU ARE TOTALLY MISSING OUT.
