I think its relatively unknown. The film Hard Candy is amazing, kinda uncomfortable for guys to watch but girls will love it. Its a thinking film not something to pass time with.

Not sure if it's relatively unknown, but everyone I mention it to has never heard of it, although I am sure loads here have done!
I love Leaving Las Vegas starting Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue
Perhaps a bit less known, Tsotsi (South African) and Y Tu Mama Tambien

The Brotherhood of The Wolf.
The original version in French with subtitles. Its a cracking film, never heard of it before I found it in a charity shop on VHS, its so cool. A bit gruesome for some people but I loved it.

An independent film called "Nothing Personal". It is a film about two friends in N Ireland - one Catholic, one Protestant. As the troubles get worse they end up on opposite terrorist sides. A very sad and beautifully made film - a must see!

City of God - About the youth gangs of Brazil and is told in a style similar to Goodfellas. Has subtitles but is a 5 star film that you will find hard to forget. In turns it is violent, funny and sad. Just get it and I promise you'll enjoy it.

Four Rooms. It's four stories set in one hotel; written by four different writers. The last one is written/directed by Quentin Tarantino and is so typically him, it's great. Not sure how many people know it but it's got the markings of a cult classic.

One that is not well known in the U.S., but might be well known in Japan and that is Ikiru starring Takashi Shimura and directed by Akira Kurosawa. It was made in 1952. It is a beautiful story and Shimura was brilliant in it. It is one of my favorite performances.
