Land isn't necessary but a proper basking area is. The Zoomed Floating Dock is good and you need to position the UVB bulb and heat bulb ten inches over the basking area. Some people make them out of PVC pipe or buy the non floating ones like the Turtle Ramp. Avoid the turtle landing.

You need a really large tank (ten gallons per inch of shell), a water heater, filter, two light fixturesm 5% UVB bulb, and a heat bulb as well. Try this link and website for more help http://redearslider.com/startup.html

Good luck.

Enough to where the whole turtle can bask out of the water. Meaning the complete shell/body can dry off. depending on size there are many options..plexiglass basking area..large rocks..floating docks made for turtles..river driftwood be creative and safejust be sure the whole turtle can get out and dry off easily to prevent a very serious and hard to cure shell rot.

They don't need 'land' as much as they do a basking site.

Basking sites should allow the turtle to get totally out of the water, need to be easy to climb, not scratch the shell, and should be nice and warm (about 90F).
