Read it wrong, so I guess I'm the ignorant one for once...
Democracy is what it is, the majority rules, so it can be a mob mentality in some cases. However, did you take a look at the Presidential Election? The majority does not rule on that one. It is won by Electorial Votes, not Majority.
So far (from 2000 - present), it hasn't been mob mentality, it has been a Theocracy, where the top few have been making decisions for the majority, and that is worse than mob rule...

NO, and that Mob Mentality is spelled Republicans! I too love my country, and I am not going anywhere! We have the constitutional right to gripe about our Government, and the fact that the Republican Majority is ruling this country turns my stomach! When I see what they are doing to us, and the minority has the temerity to object, we are smacked down at every turn! When you walk with blinders on, you only see what is in front of you! Which is why the Republican Party is so narrow-minded, and backward!
If we could get the Republicans 'the hell out' then we might have a chance to regain some semlence of integrity, and sanity!

where in the hell did you get the idea that majority rules in this country? We have a president with a 30% +/- that is persuing a war that 70% do not agree with and he doesn't give a dam what the people want. We have representatives in congress that are so entrenched in office that they feel they are making their decisions, not on what the people want, but, what THEY think is best for the people! And you think we have majority rule! You should explore the net and get an education on what is going on in this country instead of believing all the grade school battles between" liberals & conservatives" that are posted in Yahoo answers.

No, you are correct. Democracy actually means mob rule and complete disregard for individual rights. You can find definitions that clearly spell out the differences of democracy and republic online. Here is one below:
We have been lied to and brainwashed about "democracy" being the best form of government---IT ISN'T! It's one step below fascism, which is what we really have now.

The Day Democracy Was Put On Hold
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0302/S00064.htm
For the greater majority of the world, we remember the exact moment when John F. Kennedy was shot, when Challenger blew up in the Florida sky, when Martin Luther King was assassinated, and how the strike on Pearl Harbor instigated the United States into joining France and England in fighting against the evil totalitarian regimes of the world. These are days, historic and momentous events that have forever changed our world. On that, I offer with a sense of certainty, most of us would agree. But, dear readers, fellow citizens, there is another date, of just a mere moment ago, that I would offer with as much certainty, the great number of us have no recollection or knowledge. It was the day our civil liberties were put on hold. Actually, to be more literal and in absolute correctness - it was the day our civil liberties and all that we hold dear - were obliterated.

The great masses of the people in the very bottom of their hearts tend to be corrupted rather than purposely or consciously evil ... therefore ... they more easily fall a victim to a big lie than to a little one, since they themselves lie in little things, but would be ashamed of lies that were too big. —Adolph Hitler

Well, the word democracy does mean mob rule in the original Greek. But, I would tend to disagree with your assessment for the most part (although I can sympathize with your frustration).
The most important aspect of the modern democracy is the introduction of inalienable rights that protect the minority from the whims and prejudices of the majority. Without those rights it would indeed be mob rule. With them, it's an alright sort of system.

We live in a CORPocracy. Companies and their lobbyists with briefcases of cash make the laws. As intended in the constitution, the majority of issues are to be decided on a state level ... hence united STATES of america.
The power of the Federal Government has increased to ridiculous levels since the turn of the 1900's.
Revolution is an important part of Democracy, and we are long overdue for another one.

You know about 25 to 30 % of Americans actually vote. Why do you assume the smart ones are in that percential.
National elections are a joke. Clinton proved that. Why bother if my vote doesn't even count. I do believe in local politics though. You know which neighbor to put on the city council, etc.
I am an old Veteran so to me this is the America I bled for. Love it or leave it.
God Bless!

The U.S. is not a democracy. There is something called the "House of Representatives". Congressmen represent you since you cannot vote on national issues.
