I have had it looked at and the noise is very irritating. It made this noise slightly when I had first bought it and I have had the steering fluid and everything else checked to make sure it isn't something critical or something that needs to be replaced. The only problem is the noise everything else works fine.

I have a Mercury sable -98 and wife's winter beater is a 93 Taurus.
You may want to heave the power steering reservoir emptied an add a bottle of Lucas power steering conditioner and stop leak.
If you feel the steering works hard in one direction only the steering rack may need replacing. Auto parts stores have rebuilt ones and you can find them at auto salvage yards. They are a pain in the a*s to replace because of the confined area to work. A good mechanic with a lift could do it in 2-3 hrs.
