Ok can someone help becaue i am not getting this. I think my problems use distributive property and the subtraction, addition, division or multiplication property as well..
i dont know how to solve them so lease help me

one of my problems is 3x+2(x-1)=8

another is 6(2-r)=-18

3x + 2(x - 1) = 8

First, distribute the 2.

3x + 2x - 2 = 8

Now, combine like terms.

5x - 2 = 8

In order to get rid of the -2 on the left hand side, add 2 to both sides.

5x = 8 + 2

Add the numbers on the right hand side,

5x = 10

The goal of equations is to isolate x. This is done by dividing both sides by 5.

x = 10/5
x = 2

Without solving it for you:

1. Use the distributive property first to rid yourself of the parenthesis.
2. Combine any like terms (as you have in your first question).
3. Rid yourself of any numbers added or subtracted on the side of the variable to both sides.
4. Rid yourself of any coefficients of the variable through division on both sides of the equation

If you do your steps right (which is the important part) you should get an answer of x=2

3x + 2(x - 1) = 8

3x + 2x - 2 = 8 {distribute the 2 over x and -1}

5x - 2 = 8 {combine like terms}

5x = 10 {add 2 to both sides}

x = 2 {divide both sides by 5}

--------------------------

6(2 - r) = - 18

12 - 6r = - 18 {distribute}

- 6r = - 6 {subtract 12}

r = 1 {divide by -6}

3x+2(x-1)=8 first mulitply out 2(x-1) you do this by mulitplying each unit in the parenthesis.
2*x=2x;
2*-1=-2
now the equations reads:
3x+2x-2=8 Then you add like terms. 3x+2x=5x
5x-2=8 add 2 to each side
5x=10 divide each side by 5
x=2

#2
You start this one the same way:
6*2=12
6*-r=-6r the equation now reads:
12-6r=-18 subtract 12 from each side
-6r=-30 divide each side by -6
r=5

how this helped!!! if you need more help feel free to contact me... i love doing algebra like this.

3x + 2(x-1) =8
3x + 2x - 2 = 8
5x = 10
x = 2

#2
6(2-r) = -18
12 - 6r = -18
-6r = -30
r = 5

Well to solve a multistep problem, you need to use several steps, which you should have learned in school, but either your teach sucks (unlikly) or you were looking at the verry attractive kid or student teacher next to you or across the room or out in the hall instead of paying attention to the teacher trying to teach you....

first of all write x[3+2]+[2(-1)]=8
5x-2=8
x=2

6[2-r]=-18
2-r=-3
r=5
