Me and the wife have this argument all the time. She says American but I say English hands down.

there is funny on both sides of the pond, where sitcoms are concerned the general trend is that America has had some real gems as of late with hits like curb your enthusiasm, arrested development, scrubs, friends, everybody loves Raymond. whereas English sitcoms have declined recently with only extras, the office and phoenix nights as highlights. This was the opposite in the past where England had dad's army, porridge, fawlty towers, blackadder and monty python. whereas America had happy days, m*a*s*h and really generic sitcoms.
America has and always will have the best cartoons with bugs bunny, top cat, Simpson's, southpark, family guy, American dad.
on the increase in England instead of sit coms are TV news shows and shows of just comedians talking about funny subjects i.e. mock the week, 8 out of 10 cats, Q.I., have i got news for you, not the 9 o'clock news and brass eye. the American version of this, the daily show with Jon Stewart is average as it is just him with no banter between others.
America has more stand-up comedians because it has more people, i think that English stand-ups are better because I'm from England and the references to culture i get. whenever i watch American stand-up its a lot of swearing for no reason or it's a racial joke (which are normally funny but can get old).
Therefore i think this is the age of American TV but this is the age of British stand-up and comedy TV news.

I disagree entirely, american humour is false and cheesy, and what's with all the canned laughter? There are plenty of classic British comedy series that sell all round the world.

To an extent I agree, mainstream prime time British TV comedy is horrifically cheesey and cringe worthy. However there are some wickedly good comedy programmes too such as (in my opinion) Little Britain that can hold it's head up high in any company.

Hello!
I am French but I will answer your question anyway! :-)
I love British humour. Nothing beats gems such as The Monty Python, and more recently Father Ted, The Office, and many many others. Nothing cheesy about them!!
I do like some American shows like Frasier and My Name is Earl though...

From the states it dosn't get any better than Married With Children. I think you are right about our comedy now Still Game excluded , bring back the old comedy like Love Thy Neighbour and In Sickness And In Health ( Alf Garnett the funniest racist ever ) and stuff the pc brigade.
