OMG- there is no excuse. I find animal abuse to be horrific and I am getting tears in my eyes right now just thinking about it! Cock fighting and dog fighting is torture. People who are capable of this kind of behavior are sick. Antisocial personality disorder is marked by abuse to animals and without any feeling of remorse. What good do these people contribute to society? I think they are human waste. I also think it is disgusting that our legal systems do not have stiffer punishments for such crimes. Often these people get off (if they actually get charged) with a fine and community service. Maybe if there were laws that had more serious consequences and there was more funding in the government to enforce these laws, there would be less of this cr@p. Also, more money needs to be put into services educating people about proper animal care and responsibilities. It is sadly just not much of a priority in our society.

It's sick and wrong. Those people have serious mental health issues and need help. I worry that we 'punish' these people but that they will do it again when the punishment is over. I worry so much about those animals, that my biggest priority is less on punishing the abuser and more on keeping animals safe and sound. If the punishment would ensure it never happening again, then I'm all for it. If the person is punished and then harms MORE animals, then the punishment isn't enough. Because people don't get 'life' or anything close for hurting animals (heck, the way we raise, slaughter, and kill animals in the US for food is often torture for the animals - we don't do a thing to those people) I think focus really needs to be on how to protect the animals. I'm all for punishing the abuser, but it needs to go farther to ensure that animals are treated well. The way we humans treat animals, children, the disabled, and other living beings that cannot protect themselves is, to me, one of the most important ways of knowing if a civilization is actually civilized. It's so sad and sickening to think of these animals that Vick and others abuse every single day in this country.

People who hurt animals make me sick! Animals are innocent and defenseless...why would anyone want to hurt anyone who is innocent and defenseless???? I seriously feel both angry and sad when I hear stories about people hurting animals.
Several people who answered this question that people who hurt animals should receive consequences. Indiana (the state I live in) has just passed a new law that can mandate people charged with animal cruelty to receive counseling. Hopefully that will stop some people from hurting animals. Here's the info on the bill:

To me, people who abuse animals are on the very same scale as pedophiles. Animals and children are both innocent creatures. If I EVER caught ANYONE abusing an animal I would smack the crap out of them. Subhumans who beat and torture animals are sociopaths. If this behavior starts at an early age, they will most likely become serial killers. Edit- I wrote what *I* would do to Michael Vick, given the chance, but I am editing it out because I am not going to lower myself to his level. I have more class than that.

Maybe we should do the same thing to the individuals who sponsors such events or put them on a short chain to a tree and let the elements sort them out. No food or water.

I wish that animal abuse didn't exist. You see it all the time in the news, and thank god local officials are trying to correct this with Animal Police units. I would like to see the punishment for any one that abuses animals, children, or anything else at a lesser advantage to be placed in jail and treated the same exact way.

I think people who do such awful things to animals should be treated the same as they would if it were another person. animals are living things, after all.
it really makes me sick when I hear all the horror stories about animals. maybe if someone did the same to them as they did to the animals, they might think twice.

It is disgusting . It is a crime . If they torture animals like dogs, cats horses etc. they will abuse a human eventually. Why do I say this?Because humans as well as other creatures will abuse what they believe lower than themselves with contempt and hatred , that is if they are nasty in behavior and eventually humans are not far behind in the evolutionary scale.
