Lumber is sold by a "board foot" rating, and 1 board foot = 144 cubic inches. For example, aboard measuring 12" x 12" x 1' thick is 12x12x1=144 cu. in., or 1 board foot.

For your problem we have 3 pieces of 2"x4"x18ft. and 14 pieces of2"x4"x8ft. We've got to turn all this into cubic inches first.

2"x4"x(18x12)" times 3 pieces = 5184 cubic inches
2"x4"x(8x12)" times 14 pieces =10752cubic inches
.................................................. --------
.................................................. 15936 cubic inches

15936/144 = 110.67, or 110 2/3 board feet

Now, the price is $520.00/1000 board feet, so the price for 1 board foot is 520/1000, or $0.52
Therefore 110.67 board feet= 110.67x0.52=$57.55

I have a hunch you were simply hung up on what a board foot was. My math will therefore be unnecessary to you.

Good luck!

$520([3{2 * 4 * 18} + 14{2 * 4 * 8}] / 12) / 1000
$520([3{144} + 14{64}] / 12) / 1000
$520([432 + 896] / 12) /1000
$520(1328 / 12) / 1000
$520(110 2/3) / 1000
$520 *1328 / 12000
$690560 / 12000
$57.55

Answer: the price is $57.55.

3*24*48*18*12 + 14*24*48*8*12 = 2294784 in^3

2294784 in^3 * bf/144 in^3 = 15936

15936 bf * $520/100 bf = $8286.72
