A Quad should only be referd to as Quad not a Quad bike. Some people get confused. The fuzz are still not clued up on what it is classed under they say it is nether a bike or a car. So dont drive it under your bike or car licence. So with the increase of popularity It is classified as an ATV. You are not supposed to drive one until you have done a 3 day course and purchased a certificate.

Since the word "bike" is a slang expression it has taken on extra meaning besides simply being short for bicycle. So anything that you ride by straddling the seat and using handlebars for control has been generically termed a bike. Calling a quad bike is simply adding a qualifier so that you know it's a four wheeled bike instead of a two wheeled one.
Maybe not technically correct, but the english language is loaded with slang, exception and other unexplainable things.

Bicycle - 2 wheels (known as a 'bike').
Tricycle - 3 wheels (known as a 'trike')
Quadricycle - 4 wheels (known as a 'quad').
They have become known as 'quad bikes', as the the word "quad" on its own already has several meanings in the English language.

because the original quad bikes had four wheels, they were made heavy duty for biking over rough country, as they became more popular and people became more adept at this sport they made them into two wheels but the name stayed the same ,, the name bike.. is an origunal decription for anything with wheels regardless of how many wheels are on it..
