Are they really complaining they are unable to proselytize (indoctrinate/brow beat my children?) and thereby gain new recruits?

That their social agenda isn't given preferential treatment?

It's easier to reconcile a doctrine of hate and oppression within a religion that claims to be about peace and love, if you can fantasize that you are somehow the victim of the very kind of injustice you are causing.

Yep - they're upset they are no longer in charge as they were as recently as 1978 when teaching creationism was finally outlawed as a science subject.
