A region.
Sports teams are not ALWAYS named after cities (they mostly do, but not always.)
An example is Golden State Warriors, an NBA team named after California's nick name "Golden State." Nobody would think that Golden State is a city because a team has this name.
Also, you can ask your friend to find New England "city" on the map.
-------------------------------
New England is a region of the United States located in the northeastern corner of the country, consisting of the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

New england must be a region since old england is a region.
As for the sports team, I mean it's all fixed including the name.
As for the states - I say its New Hampshire, Vermont, Mass. Conn., and RI but not Maine. Maine sucks.

New England is a region, consisting of the states CT, RI, MA, NH, VT and ME. The Patriots are based in Boston, but are associated with the whole region. Similarly, the Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans are associated with their respective states, These teams play in Charlotte, Minneapolis and Nashville, respectively.

It is a region. It is also a team named for the region (since all the states are rather small there they kind of share).
