Unless this is hunting season, and unless you have a valid license to trap squirrels and rabbits, then it is illegal. Suppose you ask the game warden or the sherrif how to bait your traps?

The bait you should use are carrots for the rabbit and nut for the squirrel.

A handful of peanuts works on squirrels every time. Rabbits, I'm not sure about.
