nobody knows the origin of the start or the begining of the universes. We all have our own ideas.

I will not repeat what others have said. The Bible is mythology.
There are some oddities about the creation account in Genesis. God is said to have created light first and only later the sun and the moon. This is consistent with Big Bang theory, pure energy coming about first before the universe cooled down and matter appeared. But then the Book goes on about dividing the waters above the Earth from the waters below, which makes no sense in scientific terms, not to say Eve being made from Adam's rib.
Is it not possible that the nomadic Hebrew barbarians picked up a garbled version of scientific knowledge from the Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilisations?
Scientists are looking for ways of testing something called M-theory. There are difficulties about the Big Bang theory and scientists have hypothesised dark matter to explain why galaxies remain in existence, and dark energy to explain why the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. It seems that a new way of looking at the universe is called for.

Once again no one knows what they are talking about.

While the TERM Big Bang came from scientist Fred Hoyle it was meant to be a put down, a joke.

The Big Bang theory is properly called the Theory of the Primordial Atom and it was proposed by a Catholic Priest who held degrees in Phsyics and Astronomy.

It was held in low esteem because it sounded too much like Genesis.

The unfortunate thing was the Priest postulated some thing would occur and they did!

Hubble discovered stars and galaxies were moving away from us.

Bell Labs found the Cosmic or Gamma ray signature all around us in space at 3.6 degrees Kelvin, which is, basically, the event horizon of the expanding universe.

Two other scientists, independently, came up with the same math of motions.

At the time the Priest was lecurting his white paper on the Primordial Atom science believed the universe was stagnet, in a steady state of existance.

Einstein, in fact, came across the math that proved the universe was expanding and changed that math because he and others were under the impression the Universe was not in expansion but in steady state.

Einstein said that was the biggest mistake he ever made.

The funny thing is Science says the Universe is 14 billion years old and the Earth and Sun are about 4.5 billion.

That's about 2/3 the way from the big bang

The Old Testiment in Gensis says the Earth and Sun came into being on the 4th day

That's 2/3 the way from let there be light.

Funny how the Bible got that ratio correct 3,000+ years ago!

The Bible also says man came about in the last moments of the 6th day.

Science also agrees with that.

Dr. CArl Sagan's cosmic calendar says that the Universe began on the first second of day one of the first comsmic month and Man came about on the first second of the first minute of the first hour of the 30th or last cosmic day of the first month and we are still in that same hour right now.

the best way to answer this is for us to realize that the big bang is a scientific theory vs. religion and the holy books. science is based on facts and religion is based on faith. they don't necessarily contradict each other all the time (some scientists are also very religious) due to the fact that even scientific answers are not always satisfying. there are areas of science in physics and biology that hits the dead end where no logical phenomena can explain why it is happening the way it is happening. the idea of Intelligent Designs are frequently discussed among the scientists where they just cant explain scientifically the behavior or the origin of some matters. just as an example and by the way the question that still bothers me is, if we believe that the big bang theory holds water and it is the beginning of all matters, anti matters and life as we know it, what was happening before the big bang? it helps me to regain my perspective by understanding that certain things are explained by science and where things are still not understood should be withheld through faith until they could be explained scientifically, but i would not bet on it for ages to come.

There have been many good comments to this question, and a lot of bad ones. A lot of common sense and reason have been written, and a lot of utter tosh. I won't belabour or repeat what I've already spotted here. Let me add to this lot...

If God created the Universe, then who or what made God? Why is it that the religious seem to fall over themselves to use science when it suits them, or when they can distort it to their own ends, yet reject science when it says something they do not like? If the Bible, Koran, or any other holy book is the inerrant word of God why does it not clearly state what the Universe is and how it got here? Why are the holy books so vague and imprecise in their accounts on these matters?

In all, an interesting question - for the theologian. But surely, this is the wrong place for such a question.

Like wat every1 else said, the big bang theory was thought up by scientists to explain everything they saw, though if u believe in stuff like string theory, the big bang isnt a beginning anymore but rather something that happens often. Holy books were written by a bunch of people who had little understanding of nature, but since its just a book, it can be interpreted anyway you want, so 6000 years ago might be something like galactic revolutions or or each year in that 6000 might actually be somewhere around 2.5 million years, or god might be something like the fundamental forces, and all the light and angels are the spectacular display of space dust, novas, and nebulas, adam and eve(u no they ate the apple that makes people smart so god banished them because they would no longer be "happy" slaves) could be personifications of evolution(sex?). Since its a book that can be interperted anyway possible, i dont think it really matters, unlike theorys that must stand lots of criticism that could knock it down or make it a law. I find Hindu mythology closest to reality but since im human, i could be mistaken. It cant really be interpreted any other way unless u add more math but then that might mess things up. Just remember, we ate the forbidden fruit of knowledge, which means we are SMART now, so we can DO WHATEVER IN THE UNIVERSE WE WANT so long as it is in our power, and interpreting the bible anyway we want is certainly within our power. Remember in Inherit the Wind?

The Big Bang theory was produced by intelligent scientists after much thought and research, the holy books were written by people who just guessed what started the universe and then failed to ever question their initial idea.

The holy books must be read literally; no perfect being would write in metaphors as they would only confuse and split the being's followers against one another. Once read literally the holy books are shown to be utter garbage and should have no prominance on modern day human life.

For starters, i am a christian and believe exceptionally firmly in creation. So i tried not to make this biased.
The Big Bang theory differs from the stories in "Holy" books b/c scientists don't like believing in a god, as he can't be seen and measured. Thus, they created another THEORY that leaves out the presence of a god in the universe entirely, so they can explain the universes origins w/out a creating god.
The Big Bang, keep in mind, is just a theory, as really there is no proof for it, yet. i mean, where did that speck of matter that set it off come from? Evolutionists can trace it back as far as they want, but they won't get to the beginning, b/c they have no explanation for where it started.

Big Bang = Science = a far superior set of methods for acquiring knowledge about the real/natural universe than just blindly accepting ideas from mythological books.

And I can't resist commenting on "iron_serpent91" - who said, "Genesis is not a narrative on the creation of the Universe. We should therefore not conclude that because the Bible doesn't go into depth about the creation of the Universe that it is to be discarded."

Actually, there are a scary lot of people who think that genesis IS a narrative on the creation of the Universe - of course, you are right to point out that they are wrong.

However, the fact that the bible does not go into depth about the creation of the universe is a PERFECT reason to discard the bible - as an explanation for how the universe formed!

The Big Bang doesn't differ from the book of Genesis...mainly because the Book of Genesis is very general. If you were to read that account of the creation of the Universe, then you can't say that the Big Bang didn't happen.

Not heard of the Quran theory. My understanding of the big bang theory is that the universe expands and contracts over millions and trillions of years. so when the universe contracts everything is pulled into the centre (like a black hole) to the size of an atom. this then explodes (BIG BANG) and the universe then expands to it's point of elasticity and starts to contract again. The scary thing is this may have happened loads of times already and will happen loads more times. Hope this helps.
