Those are shortcuts on the desktop, such as the e for internet explorer...You shouldn't delete any that you use regularly...but delete those you don't use that often...

Right-click any icon you don't want on the desktop and choose delete. It will then be placed in the recycle bin. Generally, all icons on the desktop are just shortcuts and they can be accessed through the Start Menu and therefore I only keep shortcuts for the programs I regularly use on my desktop.

if you mean your desktop is filled with icons select one and hit delete (and say ok) or drag it into the recycle bin,
