Because it sounds different to them than what they're used to hearing.
We hear ourselves differently inside because we have a combination of things going on: 1. We hear our voice immediately after it comes out of our mouths. 2. We hear our voice reverberating around the room, the way others do. 3. Our ear drums directly pick up on the vibrations from inside our skulls.
By the way, to hear a more accurate representation of what you really sound like, you don't need a tape recorder. Just place the outer edges of your hands [the side your pinkie fingers are on] in front of your ears [sort of between the ears and your eyes], and turn your hands so they're perpendicular to your head [sticking straight out]. When you speak, it will sound different to you.

You hear your voice differently than others.
The reason is the sound of your voice that you hear travels through the bones in your head around your ears. Density of the medium affects the sound's characteristics. The density of the bones is different than air so the sound is different from that heard by others through the air and the sound that is recorded. So when you hear your recorded voice, it's a lot different from what you are used to.

Because your intire life, you only hear your voice through your inner ear. When you speak you hear what is being resonated throughout the space of your head.
everyone else hear's what's coming out of your mouth. So when you hear it through a recording (and sometimes when I have a mic and they're messing around with the sound levels) you hear something totally different.
As far as liking it goes, it all depends on your personal taste. Sometimes i like mine sometimes I don't. But i think the main thing is that you spend so much time convincing yourself that what you hear from your inner ear is good that when you hear what everybody else hears, it's not always what you WANT to hear.

the more a voice vibrates the better it sounds. thats why karaoke machines, an soem not so talented artists *cough cough* have their voice "doubled" or played back at a slightly slower pace than when u spoke, it makes it sound much better. when u speak, u hear ur own voice vibrate thru ur scull an it sounds higher an more attractive to u, so when u hear it on the recording it doesn't sound as gud as ur used to, but other people dont see whats so bad about it because to them thats how u usually sound! ♥

I've always wondered about that. A long time ago I thought I was a great singer and so I recorded myself singing along to this song by Kirsty MacColl (R.I.P) and I thought I sounded all sultry and sexy but when I played it back I died with shame! It still doesn't stop me from singing in my own home. Also, I've answered voice machines- and when it gives you an option to replay your message, I'm amazed at how...childlike I sound. So weird.

Haha! all people hates the sound of a recording of their own voice! i think of it has to do with the way maximum all people is over extreme of their social good factors like the way we glance and our character. The extra you hear your voice on recordings the fewer it particularly is going to difficulty you. Ask any musician or public speaker.

I agree with you on this. Everyone I know who has heard their voice recording did not like it, including me.

We are not used to it, we hear an echo of our voice until we hear it on a recording!

Because you hear when you speak and what other's hear, is not the same. So When you hear yourself on a tape, you are a bit unnerved that you don't sound like you do to yourself.
It's like my mom She thinks she has a crooked smile so sometimes she refuses to smile in photos. Making her look stern, which she isn't. But it looks funny to her cause she usually sees herself in reverse in a mirror from how other's see her.
