After September 11th the whole country rallied around those events. People put aside their differences and united. For a while there were no democrats or republicans, we were just Americans. Why does it take a tragic event for people to realize what is really important? Don't we all ultimately want the same things? Why can't we just work together for the greater good?

Some of the people who've answered this question are actually, themselves, the answer.

Some people just wouldn't ever unite with someone they disagree with. Even if, in the end, it would be beneficial.

Because some people to this day insist we went to Iraq because of an imminent threat to our national safety. Not Afghanistan, we all understood the man responsible was there. But suddenly we were in Iraq...and every effort, every word, every grain of mud slung by this administration since then has been to shore up that lie in order to make money for his rich friends and to shore up what was supposed to be Bush's shining place in history as a wartime American President.
Hubris people, hubris.
Now we must either believe his lies, or be called unpatriotic and worse.
Shameful.

The whole country didn't rally and put aside their differences.

I was in New Jersey in the weeks following 9/11. I was almost attacked twice at the gym coming out of the shower because I had a towel wrapped around my head (an actual towel, because I had long hair and it was wet)

Hatred and prejudice were just as strong then as now.

because some twisted and used 9/11 to make their friends rich, wasting lives of countless thousands including our own troops, and ultimately leaving us more vulnerable the next time out.
